Upington
The principal town of the Green Kalahari and also home to Orange River Cellars’ head office and tasting centre.
Upington traces its beginnings back to 1875, when a mission station was erected here. Today Upington is a popular tourist destination due to its scenic location on the banks of the Orange River, wonderful year-round climate and modern amenities.
Since 2024, the production of wines is centralized at our Upington Cellar. Harvested grapes of the Green Kalahari are delivered in bins to our Keimoes, Kakamas, Groblershoop and Grootdrink Cellars, from where it is then transported to our Upington Cellar for the production of wine.

Kakamas
To some, the town’s name originates from the Khoi word, ‘gagamas’ (brown), referring to the red clay of the area with which women daub their faces.
To most, though, Kakamas is a Koranna word meaning ‘poor pasture’, which is an ironic description for this lush, fertile area lined with vineyards, cotton and lucerne fields.
In 2023, Die Kelder Bistro & Farmstall saw the light at our Kakamas Cellar. Here you can experience our delicious wines, relax with a coffee, quench your hunger and shop for beautiful items.

Grootdrink
As one can deduct from this quaint little town’s name, it is a major wine-producing hub within the region.
The peace and quiet here, along with beautiful scenery of red Kalahari sand and quiver trees, make it a must-see destination for travellers.
