Orange River Cellars from the Northern Cape reaffirmed its position as one of South Africa’s foremost producers of Muscadel by obtaining a place under the Top 100 SA Wines with the Orange River Cellars Red Muscadel 2012. This year’s Top 100 SA Wines attracted 491 entries, a 15% improvement on last year’s entries indicating that it is now firmly entrenched as a premier South African wine competition. The achievement follows last year’s successes Orange River Cellars’ Muscadel wines achieved in local and international competitions. A White Muscadel from the winery was selected as one of the Top 10 Muscat wines in the world at the International Muscats du Monde Competition in France, while the Orange River Red Muscadel 2012 was chosen as overall winner at the South African Muscadel Awards. Koos Visser, Marketing Manager for Orange River Cellars, says that a place under the SA Top 100 wines was a tremendous achievement.
“For one of our wines to be selected for this list at a time when South Africa is making its best wines ever and offering such a diverse style of wines from various regions, is a real honour,” says Visser. “We are proud to find ourselves in the SA Top 100 list rubbing shoulders with some of the industry’s leading names. Hopefully our presence will draw attention to the fact that the Northern Cape has come of age as a wine region – yes, we make a world-class Muscadel, but watch out for our other wines in next year’s list!” Visser said he is glad that Muscadel achieves recognition in a competition whose judging panel includes renowned international judges. “Muscadel is part of South Africa’s wine heritage and the general quality must rank among the best in the world,” he says. “It is great to see international palates finding this wine good enough to achieve Top 100 SA status and we hope this leads to greater recognition for a classic South African wine style.”
