It was a resoundingly dominant performance by Keimoes, walking away with 11 out of the 17 trophies awarded at this year’s show. An outstanding feature of this achievement was that the cellar displayed its diversity by winning with a range of wines in different categories, from light, dry Sauvignon Blanc and Colombar to Red Unfortified Wines and Fortified Muscadels and Jerepigos.

According to Mosdop Dippenaar, Keimoes Cellar manager, this year’s Young Wine Show achievements can be attributed to the cellar’s natural resources, people and technology. “Our grape farmers produced excellent grapes this year, and this is due in large part to their commitment to quality under the guidance of Orange River Cellars’ viticulturists,” says Dippenaar.

“The Keimoes cellar team proved that they refuse to sacrifice top quality under the pressure of large volumes of grapes. This is an attitude shared by all of Orange River Cellars’ producer cellars. The fact that Keimoes could rely on the most modern technology available during this year’s harvest, like machinery designed to balance pH levels, also played a significant role in elevating the wine quality and stresses the importance of a scientific approach to winemaking in a business of our scope.”

Keimoes was also the star performer of the Orange Vaal region at the National Young Wine Show, held in Cape Town last week. The cellar was awarded one class winner title for its Red Jerepigo, as well as gold medals for Colombar and White Muscadel (wooded). At the same event GWK Landzicht won a gold medal for its White Muscadel, Orange River Cellars’ Kakamas Cellar achieved a class winner title for its White Muscadel, while Grootdrink Cellar won gold in the category for red blends with a Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot.
